Campy 11 spd hub noisy

Postby Stevek433 » June 5th, 2015, 5:08 pm

Quick question. purchased the flo 30 wheels with the campy hub last month. Installed it on my Orca silver with full Campy chorus. When free wheeling, the flo hub is quite, quite noisy; much louder than my Cannondale CAAD10 with full dura ace. Kind of annoying actually....I like a quiet bike.

Did I do something wrong in the installation...not lubed well enough? Any ideas on quieting it down or is this normal?

Love the wheels though...they have turned the Orca, already a very good climbing bike, into a climbing monster. Set a personal record climbing to the top of Vail pass (10, 602 ft) this past weekend. Chris, you are right-- aero beats weight!

Tnx!!

Thanks Chris for responding. Yes it is the clicking noise from the hub when coasting. Vail pass is a 17 mile, 2500 foot elevation climb from my house in West Vail, , and of course, a 17 mile, downhill "coast" back home. Easy to get 45++MPH going back down. (I chicken out around 50--time to brake!!).

Did some Google searching on the Flo hubs and I see I am not alone; others have made similar comments about the noise. Some like it, some don't. So it is what it is. I have about 300 miles on the Flo 30's now and I will never give then up...they are truly an outstanding set of climbers!

Steve.

Hey Steve,

I would agree...depends on the hub. Some are known for being phenomenally loud (Hopes and Kings come to mind right off the get-go), while others are almost silent when freewheeling (Dura-Ace and Onyx Racing Products come to mind).

For me, being used to Hopes, I think most hubs are quiet ;)

If it really bothers you, I know some people change the lube in their Hope and King hubs (i.e. clean it out and put some Phil Wood or Park Tools bike grease in...heavier lube seems to reduce the noise a bit...perhaps this is possible on the Vortex hubs? Chris would need to chime in on that idea, though.
