Weight vs Aero for really light rider

Postby goldstone0 » May 31st, 2014, 3:35 pm

Hi guys,

I read the article on weight vs aero and was wondering how I can work out the savings I might make using a 60/90 vs something like a Hed Jet 6/9 combo. I am 125lbs & my FTP is 226. I'd like to know how much more I would notice the weight vs a heavier rider (if I would notice it at all). I'm looking for an aero wheelset for the Cairns Ironman next year, which is an undulating course.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for writing. Even though you are lighter than the example given in our blog article, your weight relative to the difference in wheel weight is very large. Let's look at some numbers.

Difference in Weight between FLO 60/90 and HED Jet 6/9 is ~250 grams. I'm estimating this because HED does not list their wheels weights individually, only as sets.

Your weight in grams = 56,700 grams.

Bike Weight with bottles etc = 9,100 grams.

Percent increase using FLO wheels = 250 / (56,700 + 9,100) = 0.38%

I'm sure you realize this is a VERY small number. Now I don't know exactly how the two wheel sets will compare because no one has done a direct comparison. However, if we assume that the aerodynamics are the same - they are likely similar - and we made an educated guess using info from our blog articles, I'd guess you might save 20 seconds over 112 miles.

I hope that helps.

Take care,
Chris Thornham

Thanks Chris. That's the sort of info I was after. I look forward to getting a set.
